Chapter 11:

Dual Pines

“I don't get it, why are we going to Dual Pines?” Sideon asked, baffled at how we had made the connection between Caedes and a place like Dual Pines.

“Someone reported seeing a small creature here, by this camping and hiking trail, then they reported a body. The description matches, so we have to check it out,” I replied to Sideon and looked at Dorian, who seemed very pleased that we were out in the open for once.

“We don't normally do camping on field missions. But the town is so old, and it's been abandoned for years, collecting dust. Apparently, some ranger was doing patrols looking for poachers when he saw a bit of what we’re assuming to be Caedes, then found the body. No clue how the person got out there alone.”

“Has the body been identified yet?” Dorian asked.

“I went to the morgue to see; she looked just like the others. No one has claimed the body yet.” I looked at my feet. “Let's go find the area where the body was found.”

In less than 20 minutes, everyone was ready to head out into the field. Carter called us in. “Good luck, and remember, if you encounter Caedes, call for backup. As soon as you set sight on her, report it.” I could hear the worry in his voice. He’d heard Sideon go on about how Caedes needed an army to be taken down. For all we knew, he could be lying. Even with Dorian’s reassurance about the hormone smell, I did not fully trust that man.

Carter broke the stick and from the inside it melted out into the air and sliced into time and space. It opened a whirling hole in the office with powerful winds to the point where it sucked in some of the office furniture.

“GO!” Carter said, grabbing his items that were getting suctioned into the abyss. Carl shrugged and with Arkanseus on his shoulder, leapt into the hole, dragging Sideon with him.

“Woah!” Dorian whooped and then placed his backpack, checked that it was on tight, and leaped in. I was the last one. With a slight feeling of trepidation, I closed my eyes and allowed the portal to swallow me. My body felt like it was levitating, almost as if I was in water. I felt suspended, and for a second, peaceful, before feeling my body bounce against the hard ground. I’d smacked my forehead lightly and dazed, I shook my head. I checked that my backpack was still secure and slowly stood up. We were in some kind of forest.

“Where the fuck are we?” Dorian cried out, a hand popping up from a nearby bush. A leg then emerged and out popped his head. “Becca, come help me out!” Carl and his manticore were just shy of us, and I heard their laughter.

“I knew those cartridges were not ready to use.” I grabbed Dorian’s hand with both of mine and yanked him out of the plants, which he exited quite gracefully. Seemed like a man who was sturdy on his feet.
